Gleanings Literary Publication Submission | Deadline for Submissions September 18
Gleanings a literary publication celebrating the creativity, experiences, and unique voices of the Garden Spot Communities family. We invite residents to submit original works that reflect the richness of life, imagination, and community.
Eligibility: The inaugural edition of Gleanings is open to residents of Garden Spot Village and Frederick Living.

Highland Presbyterian’s Performing Arts Series: Lancaster British Brass Band
Lancaster British Brass Band, a 31-piece ensemble drawing musicians from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey.
Founded with a commitment to professional-level performance, the band features accomplished soloists, ensemble players, and music educators.
The band is led by Dr. Tina DiMeglio, an accomplished conductor, clarinetist, and educator.

Begin with a tour of our local airport in the comfort
of the air-conditioned bus. During the tour, the driver will follow one of the airport maintenance trucks while the guide provides an overview of the airport along the route. Pass by fuel operations, the flight school, and various hangars. Drive along the runway to review the airfield and get a closer look at the air traffic control tower.
Lunch, ice cream, or both follow at Oregon Dairy. Have lunch followed by ice cream inside at the Restaurant or head straight to The Milkhouse Ice Cream Shoppe! Featuring over 25 flavors of hand-dipped ice cream, delicious soft serve, shakes & flurries, floats, signature sundaes, and tons of toppings! Join us today as we explore the rich history, picturesque landscapes and “Maker” Culture of York County, PA. We will visit locally owned shops while learning about York County’s central role in Pennsylvania’s history. We begin our day with a tour of The Popcorn Loft to learn how an idea was transformed into a specialty popcorn business. Grab your favorites to take home along with your sample bag. Next stop is Brown’s Orchard & Farm Market, known for local produce, award-winning cider, and baked goods, where you will have free time to shop. Everyone gets an Amish sugar cake to take home and a coupon for the Market. Lunch is at South County Brewing Company offering elevated pub fare. Meal choice will be picked from limited menu the day of trip. For the afternoon, we embark on a state-of-the-art immersive journey through York County’s History Center. Discover York County’s pivotal role in early expansion across Pennsylvania and its contributions to the Underground Railroad. Our last stop will be at Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop for an ice cream treat. The shop has nostalgic candy and quirky gifts. Everyone goes home with a sample “goodie” bag.

In an effort to expedite entry and for your safety, guests are prohibited from bringing non-clear bags, including backpacks and draw-string bags, into the ballpark. Only clutch purses and/or fanny packs (no larger than 5″ x 7″), clear bags (no larger than 12″ x 6″ x 12″), medical bags, and diaper bags will be permitted into Penn Medicine Park. All bags will be subject to inspection upon entry in accordance with security regulations. Strollers/wheelchairs allowed.

First stop, Kreider Dairy Farm features a high-tech view of farming, including a bus ride down the middle of Kreider’s “Cow Palace” barn and a birds-eye-view of the milking carousel where they milk 1,700 cows!
Next, at Mount Hope Estate & Winery, sit back and enjoy as your entertaining host guides you through a locally sourced, seasonally inspired menu in a stunning restored barn.
Enjoy a true farm-to-table meal served family style including an appetizer, entree, several sides, and dessert. Beverages include water, lemonade and iced tea. Before departing, stop in the wine shop for sampling/purchases. Please note if you can navigate stairs to 2nd floor or need the use of the available lift at registration.
End the day at Seltzer’s Smokehouse Experience. From the secret spice blends to hand-tended fires, witness the artistry that goes into creating Seltzer’s Smokehouse Meats’ signature flavors. Please note: closed-toed shoes must be worn and no jewelry is permitted. This is a walking tour. Guests with mobility issues can enjoy the video introduction and sampling.

Saturday, September 12 | 175th Anniversary of the Christiana Resistance | Cost: $10 + food on own

Learn about Christiana’s railroad history and the town’s role in the underground railroad taking you back to the mid-1800s and a significant event (The Christiana Resistance) that helped convince President Lincoln that war was the only option. Learn about people (some you will recognize) and see buildings that date back to those times with little alterations. Events will be occurring throughout the town. Maps will be included. Moderate walking required; historic part of town is about 200 yard square.

Join us for a delightful day in “Little Switzerland,” the charming village of Jim Thorpe, PA nestled in the Pocono Mountains. Formerly called Mauch Chunk, it was renamed in 1953 after Jim Thorpe, the American athlete and Olympic Gold Medalist.
First, we board the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway for a 45-minute narrated round-trip train ride. Watch wildlife as you enjoy views of the majestic Lehigh River through Glen Onoko and the Lehigh Valley Gorge State Park.
Lunch will be at the Historic Inn’s Broadway Grille, known for its fun downtown ambiance. Please make your meal choice on the Registration Form. Free time follows lunch to stroll the sidewalks and browse the charming boutiques that line the winding streets. Be sure to take home a memento to remind you of your trip to this one-of-a-kind European-style village.
We finish out the day with a Jim Thorpe Trolley Ride where the guides provide a lively, informative commentary on the town’s rich historic past, famous residents and Victorian architecture.

Following, enjoy the Physick Family Christmas House Tour & Carroll Gallery Exhibit, a 1879 Victorian house museum sparkling with authentic Victorian decorations that invite you to step back into Christmas past.
Free time for Christmas shopping follows at Washington Street Mall.
Next, board the Cape May Trolley to experience an early evening ride along beautiful streetscapes and Victorian homes decorated for Christmas as our guide shares about Christmas traditions. Trolleys are open-air. Dress accordingly.
